OUR HISTORY
In 1980, Dave McCammon opened the first Coffee Merchant on Broadway in Northeast Portland, Oregon. The success of the Broadway Coffee Merchant led to the opening of the Hawthorne Coffee Merchant in 1983. Doris Brodahl was hired in 1984, originally as temporary Christmas help at the Broadway store. Within eight months, Doris had been appointed manager of the Hawthorne Coffee Merchant.

In 1994, Doris Brodahl bought the Hawthorne store from Dave McCammon, who went on to close the physical storefront of the Broadway store and create www.broadwaycoffee.com in October of 1998. Seven months later Doris Brodahl bought the website from Dave McCammon and has successfully merged it with her site, www.hawthornecoffee.com.

HawthorneCoffee.com continued to grow under Doris Brodahl. Like her Portland based store, HawthorneCoffee.com is a family-run and owner-operated business providing excellent product knowledge and customer service. We continue to offer a wide selection of freshly roasted specialty coffees and premium teas from all parts of the world.

In 2006, Doris' daughter, Julie, bought the website and the retail store. In August of the following year 2007, she moved the store underground, to a larger location. The new location has room to accomadate the growing gift wrapping, delivery and online web orders.

On October 1st 2008 the Hawthorne Coffee Merchant made their decision to concentrate the retail sales exclusivly through the internet.
